SUSTAINABLE FASHION WITH A MESSAGE

Welcome to Thrift By Numbers, where you will find fun ecologically responsible outfits that celebrate national awareness days like Oral Health Day and World Poetry Day. Each outfit is assembled entirely from clothes that are thrifted by the pound at Goodwill Outlet Stores. At roughly $2 per pound, these whimsical outfits cost only about a dollar per day and extend the useful life of clothing that might otherwise end up in landfills. Wearing recycled clothing lessens our ecological footprint and cuts the demand for fast and disposable fashion.
In addition, recycled fashion allows people to explore the many facets of their personalities, regardless of age, income, and body type. Artist Dahven says, "Fashion does not belong only to the young, the rich, and the photogenic. It is an expression of self for everyone." Come celebrate with Dahven and friends!

EXTREME
THRIFTING
Goodwill Outlet stores sell clothing and other goods by the pound. Donated items that did not sell at regular Goodwill stores are put out in enormous bins for treasure hunters of all ilks -- The Good, The Cheap, and The Intrepid.

OUR STORY
Our Mission: to promote responsible fashion through thrifting
Thrift By Numbers began as a Hundred Day Project among friends. The Hundred Day Project is a commitment to do an act of creativity every day for a hundred days within the context of a bigger or ongoing project. Dahven set out to create 100 fun recycled outfits exclusively from clothes thrifted by the pound, but soon realized she could create outfits with meaning. Fashion, like other visual arts, is a form of communication and self-expression. People may be saying, "I can afford designer clothes and I want people to know it," or "I think fashion is a waste of time and money," or "Take me seriously, I am a professional," or "I refuse to conform to your bourgeois expectations." Dahven's outfits may be saying, "Remember Iwo Jima" or "Let's cure hemophilia."
Dahven works back and forth between the clothes she finds by chance at the Goodwill Outlet for $2 per pound and the list of National Days -- to interpret both silly and important causes through clothing, like Bubblegum Day and Torture Abolition Day. Each day of the year has been assigned roughly 5-15 cause celebres. Try looking at the list of National Days for each day and guessing which one the outfit best captures. Look first to the clothing, then to the posture, gestures, and props. Alternative interpretations encouraged!
Are you a Master Thrifter...?

...with a yen for fame and glory? Send us a picture of your best thrifted National Day outfit and it may be selected for posting. Include your first name, the date and name of the National Day you are celebrating, where the items were thrifted, approximate cost, and your promise that all wearable items were thrifted. You may use unthrifted props.
